Installers – don’t get left out in the cold! We’re all aware that there’s a steady surge in the sales of heat pumps so if you want skin in the game, it’s time to sign up to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.

What is the MCS?

It’s an independent quality assurance standard backed by the Government which tells all your customer that, as an installer, you are qualified to install small scale renewable energy systems such as heat pumps, solar panels and wind turbines. The scheme also covers certification for renewable energy products and technology.

Why do I need it?

MCS certification shows that your work in installing renewable energy products complies with stringent standards. It will give your work official approval as both good quality and reliable. It promotes customer confidence and covers the best practice across the industry.

Is there anything else?

Having MCS certification gives you access to government incentives and financial support on behalf of your customers. Your customers can only apply for the £7,000 Boiler Update Scheme if you and the technology you use have MCS approval.

What’s in it for me?

It will give you access to the growing heat pump market. With the Government’s financial incentives and a new generation of environmentally conscious customers, you don’t want to miss out on this growing source of business.

Is there any back-up once I’m approved?

The MCS provides its certified installers with regular updates on industry developments, best practices and regulation changes. This support will help you stay up-to-date and continually improve their services. This is in addition to the support and extra information you receive from Organic Energy if you commission its EasyPell High Temperature R290 Air Source Heat Pump

It sounds great – how do I sign up?

The actual assessments for certification are done by individual organisations approved by the MSC. Drop us a line at Organic Energy for a list of accrediting bodies on info@organicenergy.co.uk

Once you have chosen your MSC accreditation body, you will be asked to make sure your installation practices meet the MCS requirements. This might involve extra training for your staff and upgrading processes. Once you are ready, apply via a certification body. Once you have your certification you must maintain the standards and go through regular check-up assessments.

Is there an alternative?

There are organisations that operate the MSC Umbrella Scheme. These are aimed at individual installers and small businesses who may not have the resources to apply for certification.

What else is involved?

Plumbing and heating companies will also need to become a member of a Consumer Code, either the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) or The Home Insulation & Energy Systems Contractors Scheme (HIES). This shows your customers that they are protected by a Trading Standards Institute Approved Code of Practice.

What should I do next?

If you want to stand out from your competitors and embrace the new world of renewable heating installation, get in touch with us at Organic Energy to help you through the process. We are always happy to help forward thinking installers in the Organic Energy partnership scheme.
